This was very sad news to wake up to. It’s even sadder to hear people’s perception and assumption at what could have led to the awful ordeal, ignoring the psychological aspect of it.  The whispers were so loud carrying blame, judgment and regrets.

In the aftermath of such tragedies, it’s common for society to jump to conclusions and cast blame. However, condemning the mother without understanding her psychological state is both unfair and counterproductive. Mental illness can cloud judgment and warp reality, leading to actions that seem incomprehensible to a healthy mind.

Instead of blaming the victim, society should reflect on how such tragedies can be prevented in the future. We must cultivate an environment where struggling individuals feel safe to seek help without shame or fear of judgment.

As we grapple with the horror and grief of this incident, it is crucial to pause, reflect, and understand the underlying psychological struggles that might lead to such a tragedy.

  1. Postpartum Depression and Psychosis
Women can experience intense emotional and psychological changes after childbirth. Postpartum depression can manifest as severe mood swings, overwhelming anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness. In extreme cases, postpartum psychosis—a rare but severe condition—can lead to hallucinations, delusions, and impaired judgment, sometimes resulting in harm to oneself or others.
  2. Depression and Severe Mental Health Disorders
Chronic depression, particularly if left untreated, can distort a person’s perception of reality, making them believe that ending their lives (and the lives of loved ones) is the only way to escape their suffering. The suicidal note may reveal feelings of hopelessness, guilt, or even a distorted sense of protection—believing that death is a mercy for the children.
  3. Psychological Impact of Social Isolation and Stigma
Social isolation, financial stress, or marital discord can exacerbate underlying mental health issues. Women are often expected to maintain a facade of strength and nurturing, leading to internalized stress and shame about seeking help. In some cultures, societal judgment against perceived parental failures can be overwhelming.
  4. History of Trauma or Abuse
Past experiences of trauma or unresolved psychological pain can resurface, influencing present-day decisions. If someone is haunted by unresolved abuse or neglect, they may project those fears onto their own children, leading to tragic actions in a misguided attempt to “protect” them.
  • Mental Health is Not a Taboo
Mental health issues are real, and they can affect anyone. As a society, we must shed the stigma associated with seeking psychological help. Open conversations about mental well-being should be normalized, and access to mental health services should be made easier and more affordable.
  • Importance of Community and Social Support
Communities need to be more empathetic and vigilant. Neighbors, friends, and family members should create a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to express their struggles without fear of judgment or ridicule.
  • Early Intervention and Counseling
This tragedy emphasizes the need for early intervention. Regular mental health check-ups, especially for new mothers, should be encouraged. Counselling services and support groups can provide a safe space for individuals to share their struggles and seek help.
  • Educating Society on Mental Health Red Flags
Awareness programs should be conducted to educate the public about warning signs of severe mental distress, such as extreme mood swings, withdrawal from loved ones, hopelessness, or any behavior that seems unusual. Knowing these signs can empower communities to intervene before it’s too late.

This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for help. Don’t wait for the pain to become unbearable. Communities, religious organizations, and health professionals must collaborate to create supportive systems that identify, treat, and prevent mental health crises.

No family should have to endure such loss, and no individual should feel so hopeless as to take their own life and those of their loved ones. This tragedy should inspire us to foster a more compassionate society—one that listens, understands, and supports rather than judges.

If you need help or know someone who does, please contact a trusted mental health professional or reach out to a local support group. Together, we can make a difference.
